EINODE?

The island of Einode can be found close to the edge, sitting about four day’s travel from the endless sea. Of interest, no volcano’s have been seen on the island or its neighbours. This is of interest given the historic record of the Einodian civilization’s relations with the Zarethian Empire. Many of the surviving records of Einodian technology, magic, history, and politics are currently held in the Zarethian ‘Trade dominion office’ in Trescero.

HISTORY

Einode was one of the three ‘great’ magical civilzations, standing beside the Zarethian Empire and ‘thoughtkip’. The culture is believed to have roots as far back as the year 1795. Wars involving Einode tended to be short lived affairs due to the level of magical sophistication it was able to bring to bare at a moment’s notice. Not much is known about the internal politics, and that which is known is of restricted access in the Trade Dominion Office.

Records state that the cataclysm that claimed the entire civilization occurred early in the year 3253. However accurate timestamps are not recorded. Witness reports claim that Einodian tourists in Trescero and the Zarethian outposts turned into bizarre, magic resistant creatures as if through some curse or magical disease. These creatures were cordoned off, and analysed after death but no understanding was gleaned from the apparently chaotic corpses.

Only by the will of Lord Zareth himself were the strange creatures wiped from the face of Terminos, though it is said he permitted those on and around the home island of Einode to remain out of respect for the achievements of the culture.

GEOGRAPHY

Location: 20t 51685r

The main island of the Einodian civilization is smaller than that of most other trade nations, and no ruins of Einodian structures have ever been found on islands other than the main island. All records of sightings of the island even from before the cataclysm describe it as being lush and visually impenetrable for the forests covering it, with the only sign of intelligent occupants being a single dock. It is believed this dock was constructed in order to magically attract ships and visitors such that no-one could land anywhere else on the island.

These days, the sea around the island of Einode is considered extremely dangerous territory. The most famous risks being a coral reef barrier that appears to encircle most of the island, and the creature known as “The Nelcatra” which sightings have described as being capable of sinking entire fleets of ships. As a result of these limitations of accessing the island, virtually nothing is known of the internal geography or of the architectural hotspots beyond what can be analysed via high angle remote viewing.

There are reports in several cartography guilds of particularly intrigued mapmakers teleporting onto the island in order to bypass the dangerous waters. However beyond those that return quickly with the claim that they always arrived at the same location regardless where they ‘aim’, none of these cartographers have ever returned. As a result, only a one mile expanse of exposed coast has ever been mapped.

PLACES OF INTEREST

What few records exist show the following as potential places of interest both to tourists and in a military fashion, had any opponents been able to strike against Einode at its peak.

The Harbour:

As already touched upon, it is commonly believed among academic circles that the primary harbour for the Einodian Island was enchanted to act as some form of conceptual magnet. Almost all teleportation spells directed toward the island were redirected to arrive at the harbour. In addition, even ships that intended to land elsewhere, particularly for military purposes, found themselves pulling into the intended harbour despite any precautions against such a course of action.

Some scholars believe that this was originally intended to protect trade vessels from the dangers of a shallow and extraordinarily sharp reef surrounding the island. Others however suspect that the reef itself is magically created and itself acts as the mechanism of this magical funnelling for strictly defensive military purposes. Whatever the reason, the harbour as described in records; a standard wooden dock area with several stone buildings and large elven statues peering judgmentally on ships, is not present in accounts of explorers that had teleported to the island and managed to return. If the teleportation magic had indeed directed them to the harbour, it’s remnants have been completely scrubbed from the area.

The Relstein Factory:

Originally something akin the modern universities, the ‘students’ of the university began banding together on research and development of Uolune and Jent Ghun magics. Eventually most who attended had transitioned from students to developers and inventors. It was from this location that many Einodian technologies were thought to arise.

Descriptions of the Relstein Factory depict it as a single large domed building with seventeen covered halls extending from it to smaller domed buildings. Of interest was that the halls were mostly clustered into five groups of three running parallel, with two being completely separate from any group. It is from these descriptions and surviving art pieces that we have even a small level of understanding of einodian architecture. The joins of walls were incredibly intricate, often reaching out an entire foot in length and resulting in the structures looking ‘prickly’ as one person described it. The walls themselves were decorated with complex geometric patterns and included both engravings and reliefs alongside apparent holes into the buildings. It is likely these designs fulfilled a purpose in Jent Ghun magic, however without arithmantically accurate recreations it will likely be impossible to determine their function.

The Trade Hub:

Despite the magic of the harbour, several documents claim the existence of a very specific set of teleportation coordinates that result in arrival in a different location of the einodian island. It is believed that these coordinates represent a form of password to bypass the redirecting magic of the harbour. However, either through adjustment, degradation or the loss of the location, these coordinates no longer serve to protect a prospective teleporter from redirection.

Records indicate that the location in question was used as a both a trading centre with more magically adept cultures, and as a more direct return location for Einodian travellers. What descriptions do exist of this location describe it as a small structure inside a magnificently large marble dome. The small structure apparently consisted of seven highly decorated marble pillars supporting a smooth marble ring. The floor amidst these pillars was decorated with a geometric pattern constructed of hexagonal mosaic tiles.

The main dome structure is simultaneously described as being completely hollow, as if a giant had laid a bowl over your head, and filled with dozens of floors arranged with overlooks to peer down at new arrivals. Though no staircases are ever mentioned in accounts of this building.
